DJ Premier Celebrates the Life & Legacy of Prodigy from Mobb Deep on Sway in the Morning

Veteran producer, DJ Premier called into Sway in the Morning to remember Prodigy from the iconic hip-hop duo Mobb Deep. The New York rapper died Tuesday at age 42 after being hospitalized for complications from sickle cell anemia. The cause of his death, however, has yet to be released. Prodigy and his partner Havoc released eight albums together as Mobb Deep. Their sophomore project The Infamous put them on the map and is considered one of the most influential rap albums of all time.

DJ Premier tells us about recently performing with the rapper. He takes it back and explains the making of tracks like ‘Cop Hell’ and the remix to ‘Peer Pressure.’ The record ‘Cop Hell’ was originally supposed to be on Mobb Deep’s debut album Juvenile Hell, however it was pulled due to controversy surrounding Ice-T’s ‘Cop Killer.’ DJ Premier released the uncut track today in honor of his friend’s legacy. Paranoid Activity: Prodigy x Rick Ross

Remember that Prodigy line off the remix of ‘I Shot Ya,’ where he said “Illuminati want my mind, soul, and my body,” P raps on the LL Cool J track. “Secret society trying to keep their eye on me.”

Now MASS APPEAL brings you the premiere episode of Paranoid Activity, a new video series hosted by Prodigy himself. Asking the questions others are afraid to address, Paranoid Activity fearlessly delves into all those ominous conspiracy theories you’ve always wondered about, but never had the guts to investigate.

P is hardly the first rapper to be fascinated by the arcane machinations of these clandestine organizations that are said to pull the strings behind the scenes. Ever since 1776, when professor Adam Weishaupt established the Order of the Illuminati, the secret society has exuded a strange mystique, given its ties to the Freemasons and fondness for arcane Rosicrucian rituals.

In the hip-hop era, rumors have circulated that certain music moguls—like Shawn “Jay Z” Carter, for instance—have expanded their empires by making a deal with the Devil and harnessing supernatural forces by harnessing the power of the dark arts.

Paranoid Activity brings these furtive whispers out of the shadows and into the light for the good of all mankind. In today’s episode, P welcomes Miami rap icon Rick Ross, whose ninth studio album Rather You Than Me further solidified his standing as one of the greatest MCs of our time. The Illuminati & Hip-Hop: A Conversation With Prodigy

prodigy

Hip-hop has a long-standing fascination with the Illuminati. The secret society, which was founded in the late 1700s, has been referenced on tracks from Jay-Z, Kanye West, Rick Ross, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, and even pop artists like Madonna and Beyoncé over the years.

However, it was Mobb Deep’s Prodigy who originally started music’s Illuminati craze with his line on LL Cool J’s 1995 ‘I Shot Ya (Remix).’

Genius reached out to learn more, so Prodigy invited them to the Illuminati Ball House at a secret estate one hour outside of New York City. Continue reading “The Illuminati & Hip-Hop: A Conversation With Prodigy”

Video: No Such Thing As Halfway Cooks: Prodigy Cooks Up In A Bodega

prodigy

Last week, Mobb Deep’s Prodigy released a cookbook based on the meals he cooked up during his three-year incarceration called Commissary Kitchen. “In a world where prisoners are treated like animals, we made our experiences there feel more human by how we prepared our food,” he writes. After taking a look at it, Mass Appeal contacted P and asked him if he’d make one of the dishes. He agreed.

Prodigy met us at a bodega on the Lower East Side where he whipped up “Mom’s (and the Dread’s) Mac Salad,” a recipe he says was partly inspired by a “Rastafarian dude” he met in lockup. P also chopped it up with us about the recent prison strike, his sickle cell anemia, and the difficulty of eating right while incarcerated. “Another major reason why I did this book,” says Prodigy, “was to shed some light on how bad the food is in prison.” Continue reading “Video: No Such Thing As Halfway Cooks: Prodigy Cooks Up In A Bodega”
