Dr. Dre’s 2001: The Making of a Classic | Apple Music

Seven years after his blockbuster solo debut The Chronic permanently altered the state of the music industry and redefined the sound of west coast rap, Dr. Dre still had a chip on his shoulder. Jimmy Iovine Unedited: Discusses Cultural Appropriation, Death Row Records & Apple Music Challenges

Very seldom does Jimmy Iovine, Founder of Interscope Records & co-creator of Beats By Dre, step out and speak to the press for interviews. Today, Jimmy swings by Sway in the Morning to lay it all on the table.

While in-studio, Iovine opened up some more by touching on the violence inside Death Row and Suge Knight’s desire for Dr. Dre to leave the label. From the structure of a label to allowing the artists to express themselves — despite the fury it brought on to the rest of the world — Iovine stood by his artists.

Watch below for more candid talk about “black music” and cultural appropriation from Iovine’s eyes. Plus, catch The Defiant Ones, directed by Allen Hughes on HBO, July 9th.
